The new edition of our members’ magazine – Focus – features coverage of the National Police Memorial Day service, which was held in Lincoln Cathedral on Sunday 26 September.
Chair Steve Thorpe attended in person for the first time and was struck by how it drove home the fact that “policing is a job like no other”. You can read coverage of the event on Pages 2 - 6.
Forum also includes two inspiring stories of courage in the face of danger ahead of October’s Bravery Awards ceremony in London.
On Page 8, you can read how our Police Bravery Awards 2020 nominees PCs Lloyd Read, Paul Taylor, Peter Whittington, Sarah Breakspear, Craig Bracegirdle and PS Richard Shapland faced a man who had barricaded himself into his flat armed with a knife and spear, a “nightmare scenario” that they resolved successfully despite the risk to themselves and neighbours. On Page 11, there’s the story of PCs Mark Burbidge and Owain Smallwood, who faced down an angry water buffalo to save the life of a mother and her daughter. They have been nominated for the 2021 Police Bravery Awards which will be held later this year.
Other stories include an update on the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill as well as the Federation’s response to the recent pay freeze.
